Socio-Economic and Humanities Research Institute of the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences organized an International Scientific Conference on "The "The Cossacks and the Highlanders during the First World War (Program Russian) on September 18-19, 2014.

The Rector of YSU, Doctor in Historical Sciences, Professor, head of the IAS Aram Simonyan being a member of the conference organizing committee, in his opening speech. Emphasized the importance of the conference and necessity to investigate the theme of the First World War in a new way in particular the research of the Armenian and Russian experts. The Deputy Director of IAS Mher Hovhannisyan also delivered a report at the conference on “The Transcaucasia during the First World War according to the  Russian eyewitness”.

The participants discussed   a number of issues on the comprehensive study of the conflict. Most of the reports were on the activities of the volunteer units in the South of the Russian Empire. The issues related to the reflection of the First World War in the memories of people. 

Accompanied by the RA Consul of Armenia in Rostov-on-Don  Ararat Gomtsyan and the head of the Armenian community Harutyun Surmalyan the delegation of YSU visited the Consulate of RA. The objectives of the visit and the University's programs in connection with the region were briefly discussed. 

The delegation met the head of the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences academician G. Matishov. The programs implemented within the framework of agreement signed between the two parties were discussed and the new ways of further cooperation were outlined.

By the invitation of the rector Besarion Meskhi the YSU Rector Aram Simonyan and the Deputy Director of IAS Mher Hovhannisyan visited Don State Technical University. The possible ways of further  cooperation were discussed between the two parties. It was arranged to work out a joint agreement  and to carry out all the planned project within the specified period. 

Then YSU Delegates visited the faithful friend of  “Nor Nakhijevan” Armenian community of Don Harutyun Surmalyan and a number of intellectuals of the community. 

The Executive Director of the Community S. Sayadov and the Deputy director Mr. Hovhannisyan represented the implementation of programs of the partnership between the parties within the last three years and the existing problems.

The head of the two institutions gave instructions for the implementation of new educational-cultural and research projects and to develop the Armenian Studies center of Rostov. The rector of YSU Aram Simonyan was awarded a medal and an honorary member of the community according to the decision of the Community leaders. 

The delegation visited village of Chaltr center of Myasnikyan region populated by many Armenians next. The head of the region Arshak Porksheyan and his deputy Vladimir Kilafyan welcomed the YSU delegation.

The YSU delegation members visited the local Armenian Church, met the priest Father Thaddeus, visited the Historical-cultural Museum of the Armenians, where the local Armenian national "Ani" song ensemble performed.

The visit to the Armenian-Russian friendship historical museum of Don was also memorable, where the guests were introduced to the history, culture and achievements of the Armenians of Don.

The YSU Rector Aram Simonyan emphasized the importance to deepen relations between Armenia and Diaspora as well as the Armenian-Russian scientific and educational activities, especially in such a historical community as “Nor Nakhijevan” Armenian community of Rostov-on-Don.
